Ways of Giving

Gifts may be made directly to the Partners AIDS Research Center (PARC), and are very much appreciated. These "unrestricted" gifts are of special importance because they can be directed in a variety of ways within the Center where needs are most pressing.

If you choose, you may also direct your gift to any area of PARC at either the Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) or the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) that holds special meaning for you, including the David Brudnoy Fund for AIDS Research. For more specifics on giving, please see the How to Give section below.

The David Brudnoy Fund for AIDS Research
The David Brudnoy Fund for AIDS Research is part of an effort to raise $10 million in private and corporate support for basic and clinical AIDS studies at the MGH. Such funds are critical to giving Partners AIDS Research Center researchers the flexibility required to respond to new discoveries and quickly apply them to patient care.

While new AIDS treatment approaches, particularly combination therapies, are having encouraging success in helping people with AIDS live longer and stay in better health, the conquest of AIDS is far from complete. Although these new therapies are more promising than any used before, they are not effective for everyone. Drug resistance continues to be a problem, and the costs of these medications put them out of the reach of most of the world's AIDS patients.

At the Partners AIDS Research Center at the MGH and other leading research institutions, efforts to explore exciting new avenues of research are confounded by reductions in traditional sources of funding. Young investigators with innovative approaches find it particularly difficult to get the grants needed to pursue what may turn out to be revolutionary approaches to defeating HIV.

A Message from David Brudnoy

"Few people come to hospitals except in need - often dire need, which was the case with me. Nine days were lost from my life, as I lay unconscious at the Massachusetts General Hospital late in 1994. I was brought back from the brink, literally, of death by the hospital’s emergency and intensive care teams.

I had AIDS. I have AIDS and am alive today and coping because of the work of clinicians and researchers at this great hospital. Denial had prevented me from seeking treatment before I collapsed. The fear of death - which at the time appeared the inevitable end of a serious, AIDS-related disease- prevented many people from getting expert care early on. I’ve learned my lesson and want now to help others profit from that lesson. The latest developments in AIDS therapy have opened the possibility of converting AIDS from an invariably fatal disorder to a manageable chronic syndrome. Tens of thousands of patients, like me, are thriving and genuinely improving today because of newly available drugs. But only continued research by the finest, best trained, most committed scientists and physicians can further advance what has been done until now.

By establishing The David Brudnoy Fund for AIDS Research, I pledge to work, with the cooperation and contributions of thoughtful, generous people like you, to help this research continue and expand. The fund is my way of paying some tiny fraction of the debt of gratitude I owe to the MGH. What the researchers are doing here will surely help save countless people from AIDS.

Today we are seeing a light, dimly, at the end of that long, dismal tunnel of the AIDS epidemic. Only with funding can continued research bring that light into sharper focus. The task ahead is essential. The time is now."
