The Island of Bermuda provides a unique
opportunity for studying hereditary breast
and ovarian cancer. The island has a population
of 60,000 with only 1% immigration and
emigration per year. The island is served
by a single hospital and has a single
tumor registry. Over the course of the
last three years, we have collected family
histories of patients with breast or ovarian
cancer diagnosed since 1980. We are currently
in the process of analyzing this data
to determine the incidence of hereditary
breast and ovarian cancer on the island
and to develop ways of identifying and
notifying those families who are high
risk.
