Massachusetts General Hospital Surgical Oncologists
are specialists in cancer surgery that offer
the latest advances and innovations to our
cancer patients. Surgical Oncologists play
a leading role both in scientific research
and in translating important research findings
into better treatments for our patients. Patients
benefit from new technologies and innovation
such as lymphatic mapping for cancers, radiofrequency
ablation of tumors, isolated hepatic perfusion
for liver tumors, gene therapy, genetic testing
to identify people at risk for cancer, sphincter
sparing surgery for rectal cancer, thermal
imaging of breast tumors, and isolated limb
perfusion for melanoma.
All advances in cancer therapy are based on research in the fields of basic
science research, clinical research, translational
research (application of discoveries in
basic science to patient care), population
research and epidemiology. An extremely
important indicator of the quality and
breadth of research in an institution
is funding awarded to it annually from
the National Institutes of Health to perform
research. The Massachusetts General Hospital
receives more National Institutes of Health
funding for research than any other hospital
in the country. This tradition of excellence
enables the Massachusetts General Hospital
to offer its patients the latest advances
and innovations in medicine.
