Our Services
The Center for Endocrine Cancers is a multidisciplinary program involving the Department of Medicine, the Department of Surgery, and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. The Center has built upon the strong reputation and the historical tradition of excellence in the areas of Endocrinology and Endocrine Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital.

The U.S. News and World Report has ranked the Massachusetts General Hospital as # 2 in Endocrine diseases in the USA.

Advanced Treatments
Endocrine surgeons at the Massachusetts General Hospital have gained extensive surgical experience in the diseases of the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands. The Center is one of the largest thyroid cancer treatment centers in the USA. Our surgeons performed the first operation for Hyperparathyroidism in 1926. Our center has taken a leadership role in developing innovative techniques for the management of patients with various endocrine diseases. For example:

Adrenal
The number of adrenal operations performed each year is greater than any other center in New England. In all aspects of the diagnosis and treatment of adrenal disorders, our surgeons work closely with the other specialists that have expertise in this field, most notably the endocrinologists. This close collaborative work is extremely important for patients with endocrine disease in order to ensure proper diagnosis and therapy. Read More

Parathyroid
For patients with parathyroid conditions, the minimally invasive, radio-guided parathyroidectomy can now be performed, using a highly sensitive probe that precisely localizes the site of a parathyroid adenoma at the time of operation, such that minimal dissection is needed. We also monitor parathyroid hormone levels intraoperatively, maximizing the chances of cure following the surgery. Read More.

Thyroid
Thyroid surgery is performed through the smallest possible incision and most patients report extremely high satisfaction with the entire experience, including having minimal discomfort and returning to work and other activities within one week. Read More
