Services
The
Center for Head and Neck Cancers at the Massachusetts General
Hospital Cancer Center is one of the largest and most experienced
centers in New England dedicated exclusively to the evaluation
and treatment of patients with cancers of the head and neck,
including rare, complex forms of the disease. New patients
are evaluated during a single visit (usually lasting about
two to three hours) by the members of his or her healthcare
team to develop an optimal treatment plan. Some of the services
include:
- One-time consultation and assessments
- Single specialty or multispecialty evaluation
- Second opinions
- The latest screening and diagnostic tests, including
PET
and PET/CT
- Multidisciplinary treatments based on the latest, most
effective advances in surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation
therapy
- Access to investigational treatments through clinical
trials
- Functional rehabilitation
Advanced
Treatments
The
Center for Head and Neck Cancers offers patients access to
the most advanced, innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches,
many of which are not widely available elsewhere. These include:
- Chemotherapy and radiation with limited surgery to preserve
speech, swallowing, or vision
- Novel forms of radiation, including concurrent
chemotherapy and radiation, intensity-modulated radiation
therapy, proton beam therapy,
brachytherapy, and 3-D conformal radiation therapy
- Sophisticated voice-preserving surgical procedures
- Surgical “free-tissue transfers” to preserve
or restore appearance and function
- The latest surgical approaches offering access to previously
inaccessible areas, such as the base of the skull
- Novel medical therapies, including hyperbaric oxygen
therapy, new cancer-prevention agents, biologic therapy,
and gene therapy
- State-of-the-art imaging, including PET and computer-enhanced
CT and MRI
