Common Questions on Renal Pelvis & Ureter Cancers

What is the urinary system and how does it work?
Your Urinary System and How It Works – National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse (NKUDIC)
The Bladder – Cancer Research UK

Do you have some basic information on transitional cell cancer of the renal pelvis and ureter?

Cancer of the Ureter and Renal Pelvis – American Urological Association

Is this the same as kidney cancer?
Not really. Kidney cancer can mean cancer anywhere in the kidney. Usually it means renal cell cancer. This cancer starts in the cells that do the work of the kidneys. Transitional cell cancer of the renal pelvis is a rare cancer that also starts in the kidney. However, this cancer starts in the part of the kidney that collects urine to send to the bladder, not the kidney tissue itself.

How is transitional cell cancer of the renal pelvis and ureter diagnosed?
Intravenous Pyleogram (IVP) – American Urological Association
Cystoscopy and Ureteroscopy – National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse
Abdominal Ultrasound – Medline Plus

Where is the first place I should look for treatment information?
Transitional Cell Cancer of the Renal Pelvis and Ureter: Treatment – NCI/PDQ®

What can I expect after a nephrectomy (removal of a kidney)?
People can live normal, healthy lives with only one kidney. As long as your remaining kidney works normally, you should have no serious complications.

Do you have a list of websites, books, and other resources on renal pelvis and ureter cancers?
