Health Services Research

The Center's recent research activities include:
  • Strategies for modifying parental smoking
  • Examining the evidence base for components of systems of care for children with special health care needs
  • Comparison trial of care coordination for children with special health care needs and their families
  • Examining how state policies affect access to and utilization of health care
  • Use of subspecialists by families of children with special health care needs and associated expenditures and hospital use
  • Review of existing measures for pediatric quality of care
  • Influence of hospital characteristics on parental views of the quality of inpatient care
  • Differences in costs and quality of medical care for children under different types of insurance

Informing Policy

To improve the lives of children and their families, the Center's staff works together with state and federal health policy makers in the Social Security Administration, the Maternal and Child Health Bureau, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the National Institute of Medicine, and other agencies.

Harvard Pediatric Health Services Research Fellowship

The Center is MassGeneral Hospital for Children's site for the collaborative Harvard Pediatric Health Services Research Fellowship. This two-year training program imparts to pediatricians and other children's health professionals the skills needed to recognize trends; promulgate new knowledge; address disparities; and improve children's health care with respect to access, quality and cost effectiveness.

Academic Pediatrics

The Center houses the editorial office of Academic Pediatrics, the official journal of the Academic Pediatric Association (formerly the Ambulatory Pediatric Association). The journal was launched in 2001 as Ambulatory Pediatrics, but underwent a name change in January 2009. It continues to emphasize research on the quality of child health care, health care policy and the organization of child health services.
