The Unit

In 1971 Dr. I. David Todres, a founding father of pediatric intensive care, established the PICU at MGH. One of the early and premier intensive care units for children in the world, the unit has continued to grow and flourish since its inception. In June 2006, MGH announced the completion of a new, state-of-the-art, 14-bed unit. Each patient room is private and set up to allow a parent/guardian to remain at their child’s bedside 24/7. Alternatively, there are a number of family sleep rooms adjacent to the unit where family members may stay during their child’s PICU hospitalization. Patient rooms are equipped to support ECMO, CVVH, continuous EEG monitoring and more.

The MGHfC PICU provides monitoring and life-sustaining treatment for critically ill patients suffering from a wide range of illnesses. We provide advanced cardiovascular, respiratory, and neurological support.  In order to optimize the care of both the child and family, the pediatric intensivisits, in collaboration with the critical care nurses, orchestrate a multidisciplinary team that includes medical and surgical subspecialists, as well as:
