Investigating New Therapies

A group of doctors and scientists at MassGeneral Hospital for Children and Children’s Hospital Boston are working together to identify the genes that cause Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) and abnormal lung development.

The purpose of this study is to determine the genes that cause CDH and abnormal lung development. Once genes are discovered we hope to design effective but safe drugs for treating babies in utero to enhance lung development before birth. It is also expected that pre-treated babies will respond better to current lung therapies after they are born and have a better chance of survival and a better quality of life.

This genetic study is funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. We hope that learning what causes CDH will improve care and outcomes for the next generation of babies born with CDH. From this study we hope to design simpler, more effective treatments for children with CDH.
