Dermatology Residency Training Program
We offer a three-year program that leads to eligibility for certification by the American Board of Dermatology. Candidates for certification are required to have a total of four years of postgraduate training which would include one year post-graduate training in one of the following broad-based programs in the United States accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or a similar program in Canada accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada: a transitional year (formerly called flexible first postgraduate year), or a first-year residency in internal medicine, general surgery, family practice, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, or emergency medicine.

Residents gain a vast perspective on skin disorders and treatments in both adults and children through clinical rotations at several HMS-affiliated hospitals. The principal institutions comprising the Department of Dermatology Training Program include:

  • Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center
  • Brigham and Women's Hospital
  • Children's Hospital Medical Center
  • The Lahey Clinic
  • Massachusetts General Hospital
  • Jamaica Plain and West Roxbury Veteran's HealthCare System

The department assumes responsibility for dermatological care at several other facilities and community health centers.

During the three-year program, residents rotate through our affiliated hospitals, spending time in their ambulatory clinics as well as in specialty clinics. Basic dermatologic training is obtained in the ambulatory care units, where the residents see more than 50,000 patients per year. Staff attendings supervise residents in their clinical activities. Specialty clinics are organized to deal with specific dermatologic problems:

  • tumors
  • pigmented lesions
  • pediatric dermatoses
  • immunologic diseases
  • photobiology
  • surgery
  • laser medicine

Additionally, residents and staff attendings provide care to in-patients with dermatological disorders who are hospitalized at each institution.

Training in dermatopathology is provided through a joint effort of the Departments of Dermatology and Pathology. The Dermatopathology Division is responsible for the diagnosis of cutaneous histopathologic specimens seen at most of the institutions. We offer residents a dedicated dermatopathology experience during their dermatology training. Additional dermatopathology training is obtained through conferences devoted to the review of interesting cases held at each of the affiliated institutions. The teaching derives from approximately 88,000 cases reviewed at the hospitals and at Pathology Services, Inc. and includes lectures and unknown slide conferences. Dermatology residents are invited to attend all review conferences and other sessions as time, format and space permit.

Training in dermatologic surgery is provided through a joint effort of the affiliated institutions of the department. We offer residents a dedicated dermatologic surgery experience during their dermatology training which includes a formal lecture series, a surgical journal club review, and the opportunity to participate in the Mohs' and Laser clinics throughout the department. Additional dermatologic surgery training may be obtained through departmental sponsored conferences.

The Department faculty has always taken a special interest in developing academic dermatologists and, in particular, in encouraging trainees to undertake careers which include clinical or laboratory research. The department is the recipient of an NIH Training Grant which provides supplemental funding to support the research activities of residents who wish to pursue clinical or laboratory research following their clinical training. The research experience may take place in our own department under a faculty preceptor or may include time spent in other clinical and basic science departments at Harvard Medical School, Harvard University, or affiliated institutions.

Formal didactic departmental functions include weekly clinical grand rounds at both the MGH and Longwood area hospitals

  • clinical diagnostic conferences
  • literature review conference
  • dermatopathology conferences
  • courses in: mycology, surgery, photobiology and basic science aspects of clinical dermatology

The department provides all the basic and clinical dermatology instructions for Harvard Medical School students, and the dermatology resident staff actively participates in teaching these students. Post-graduate courses for physicians are also given.
