The Wellman Center for Photomedicine is located at the Massachusetts General Hospital is a large multidisciplinary group of scientists dedicated to biomedical actions and use of light.
Major research topics include biomedical optics, vital imaging and diagnostic spectroscopy, mechanisms of laser-tissue interactions, laser surgery innovation, photoactivated drug design and photodynamic therapy, mechanisms of skin photoaging, ultraviolet photobiology of skin, and transcutaneous drug delivery.
A partial list of research projects currently ongoing within the Wellman Center includes:
- Target-selective laser treatment of skin diseases
- Biophysical studies of optically-pumped nanoparticles designed for therapeutic cell targeting
- Live tissue imaging by confocal microscopy and optical coherence tomography;
- Photodynamic therapy
- Molecular mechanisms of photosensitization and light-activated surgical repair of tissue
- Molecular and cellular mechanisms of skin photoaging
- Endoscopic optical diagnostics and laser treatment
- Optical diagnosis and laser treatment of burns
