Administration Guidelines:

Usual Dosage Range and Route:

*Initial or loading dose must be administered in the presence of a physician*

Loading Dose: 50ug/kg IVP over 10 minutes

*Loading dose is usually given prior to starting maintenance*

Maintenance: 0.375ug/kg/min to 0.75 ug/kg/min

Standard Concentrations:

20mg/250ml D5w or NS

40mg/250ml D5W or NS

Syringe Based, variable flow, microinfusion pump: 20mg/50ml

EW Standard

20mg/250ml D5W or NS

40mg/250ml D5W or NS

Special Considerations:

-PA-line monitoring of cardiac output, cardiac index, PCWP, CVP, SVR is required for initial dosing and until an effective maintenance dose can be established

-Dosage reduction may be needed in patients with renal dysfunction.

Precautions and Side Effects:

-Hypotension

-Serum electrolyte abnormalities

-Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea

-Ventricular, supraventricular arrhythmias

-Headache
