Action: Alpha antagonist
Indications: Hypertension associated with pheochromocytoma
Pulmonary hypertension
Raynaud's disease
Hypertension refractory to conventional antihypertensive therapy
Dermal necrosis secondary to extravastion of iv medications
Administration Guidelines:
Usual Dosage Range and Route: PHEOCHROMOCYTOMA DIAGNOSIS: 3 to 5 mg IVP

HYPERTENSION: 25 to 100 mcg/min as titrated to patient's response.

Extravastion: Infiltrate area subcutaneously with small amount of 5-10 mg diluted in 10 ml of 0.9% sodium chloride within 12 hours of extravastion. Total dose should not exceed 5 mg and must be administered by a physician

Standard Concentrations: 50 mg/250 ml

100 mg/250 ml

Special Considerations: - PA line monitoring of cardiac output, cardiac index, PCWP, CVP, and SVR is encouraged during maintenance infusions.

- Monitor blood glucose levels

- Effects may be cumulative

- For extravasation, refer to policy and procedure section

Precautions and Side Effects: - Tachycardia, Arrhythmias

- Hypotension

- Angina

- Hypoglycemia

- Use with caution in patients with history of peptic ulcer disease, gastritis
