The Pulmonary and Critical Care Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School offers a fellowship program designed to train leaders in academic pulmonary and critical care medicine.

Since its establishment in 1958 by the late Dr. John Knowles, the Unit has seen phenomenal growth in basic and clinical research, grant support, space and equipment allocation, professional and technical staff, and in its clinical activities.

The program currently draws on the intellectual strengths of internationally known molecular and cell biologists, biochemists, physiologists and epidemiologists working in 6,000 square feet of newly renovated and dedicated research space. Research support for the Unit includes eleven NIH grants and nine extramural grants from agencies such as the American Lung Association, American Heart Association, and the Shriners Burns Institute, in addition to those from industry. Productive basic collaborations exist with other MGH units, with pulmonary divisions at other Harvard teaching hospitals, Tufts University, Boston University, the University of Massachusetts, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Excellence in clinical training results from exposure to a diverse patient population and outstanding teaching from the staff of the Unit, Chest Radiology, Chest Surgery, Anesthesia, and Pulmonary Pathology Services. The venue for unparalleled critical care training includes the 22-bed Medical Intensive Care Unit, administered by the Pulmonary Unit, and five additional surgical and anesthesia intensive care units. Special learning opportunities are afforded by active Lung, Cardiac, Liver, Renal and Bone Marrow Transplantation Services and a unique combined Cardiopulmonary Exercise Physiology Laboratory.

The usual duration of the Fellowship is four years but support for additional years is available for promising young investigators interested in biomedical research careers. Four fellows are accepted into the first year through the Uniform Acceptance Date Matching Program sponsored by the American Thoracic Society and the American College of Chest Physicians. These fellows are also Harvard Pulmonary Fellows and rotate as clinician trainees to the Brigham and Women's Hospital and to the Beth Israel Deacones Medical Center. Research projects can be arranged anywhere in the Harvard system.

Upon completion of the clinical and research years, fellows will have the requisite skills, publications, and curriculum vitae to launch an outstanding career as a basic science investigator, clinician-scientist or clinician-educator anywhere in the world.
