Arlotta Lab

The genetic programs that control the differentiation of distinct types of neurons in the brain are still largely unknown. In our lab we address this issue in the mammalian cerebral cortex and our main interest focuses on understanding and investigating the molecular pathways that direct the early specification of progenitors to generate distinct types of projection neurons during development. We specifically focus on the early signals that induce differentiation of corticospinal neurons, a clinically relevant neuronal target population that in humans selectively degenerates in ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia (HSP), Primary Lateral Sclerosis (PLS), and that is permanently injured in spinal cord injury.

Ramaswamy Lab

Metastatic cancers are generally incurable due to drug resistance that is thought to be mediated through poorly defined genetic networks that normally regulate stem cell behavior. We are using genomic approaches to systematically define and probe these networks. We use genome-scale profiling to generate global views of metastatic cancer at the molecular level; methods in cell biology and bioengineering to experimentally model cancer progression in vitro and in vivo; high-throughput genetic, chemical, and imaging tools to functionally interrogate these models; and computational biology and statistics for the in silico integration and analysis of this complex data stream.
