Training Health Care Professionals in the care of older adults

The Unit develops and enhances training in the primary care of older adults for medical residents and students, master's level nurse practitioner students, and master's level social work students. An interdisciplinary approach to care is taught. Training occurs primarily at MGH Senior Health but also involves other sites and levels along the continuum of care, such as the hospital, subacute and rehabilitation, elderly housing, retirement communities, and nursing homes. Special diagnostic and management strategies are critical to the well being of older adults. Despite progress over the last decade, many health professionals still receive insufficient training in these strategies, especially in primary care. Through the experties of its practice members, Senior Health is uniquely positioned to lead the training of health professionals at MGH.

Resident Physicians (Post Graduate Year 1-3)
Residents from several MGH programs learn the specifics of caring for older adults in the Senior Health practice and its affiliated sites. Participating training programs include: primary care and categorical internal medicine, medicine-pediatrics, psychiatry, and physical medicine and rehabilitation. In 1997, Senior Health participated in the Harvard - Hartford Foundation Geriatrics in Primary Care Initiative. Learning objectives are: biology of aging, recognition and management of geriatric syndromes, functional assessment, team care, and restorative and health promotion approaches. Several syllabi are available.

Students
Third-year Harvard Medical School (HMS) students have the opportunity to take their ambulatory Core Medicine training at Senior Health. Fourth-year HMS students can select Senior Health for their Primary Care Clerkship.
