"This
is indeed an exciting era in healthcare for physicians and patients alike.
Due in part to advances in medicine and improvement in nutrition and general
lifestyle, living a long life is no longer a luxury enjoyed by just the few.
Today, survival to old age is an expectation for many. But that expectation
is where generalities stop. Aging is a process, which varies from person to
person, with no two people aging at the same rate or in the same manner. While
genes do play a role in how long and how healthy we may live, peoples interaction
with their environment and the lifestyle they choose are also strong contributors
to the quality of life they experience.
Medical specialists enter a person's life at appropriate and various stages. Just as a child benefits greatly from seeing a pediatrician during the formative years, and a woman values the expertise of her obstetrician during her childbearing years, so too, do men and women from age 60 onward benefit from the expertise of geriatricians, physician specialists in the field of aging. These doctors not only have the ability to anticipate the challenges and changes that aging may bring, but also have the expertise to alter or prevent them.
I am gratified to be part of this medical specialty that has trained me to look at the person as a whole and to consider not only disease and illness, but also wellness, nutrition, exercise, sexuality, lifestyle, and a whole host of other factors. Whether you choose us for a one-time consultation or select us to be your primary care physicians, be assured that our focus at MGH Senior Health is not only on prolonging life but also on maintaining and extending health and vitality."
