| Getting
Started ... |
| Important
points to consider: |
- All volunteers must be at least 18 years of
age to enter the program. Students, age 16 and 17, may qualify for
student volunteer opportunities, scheduled during the summer. Please
call our department at 617-726-8540 to learn more.
- The minimum requirement for volunteering is
three hours a week for at least three months.
- The hospital requires that all volunteers provide documentation
of the MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccine and recent TB test results
(From within the past 90 days).
If you have not fulfilled these medical requirements,
the Volunteer Department can schedule an appointment for you with our
Occupational Health Office at your follow-up interview.
There is no charge for an Occupational Health appointment.
If you prefer, you may see your own primary care provider. However,
it is important to note that costs for MMR vaccinations and TB testing
will vary among medical providers and are expensive. Insurance plans
often do not cover these tests. These charges will be the
responsibility of the new volunteer and not the responsibility of the
Volunteer Department or the Massachusetts General Hospital.

1.
The First Step is to Attend a Volunteer Orientation
|
At
the orientation you will learn in detail about the requirements
for volunteering at MGH, learn the history and mission
statement of MGH, get important information about Fire
Safety, Patient Confidentiality, Infection Control, and
Police and Security, learn about the available placements,
and schedule a follow-up interview with a member of the
volunteer department staff. IMPORTANT: Please be sure to bring a photo ID to the Orientation Session

2.
The Next Step is the Follow-Up Interview
|
At
the follow-up interview you have an opportunity to speak
one-on-one with a staff person regarding your interests
in volunteering at MGH.
|
|
If you are accepted into
the program, you will:
- review service descriptions
for the placements that you are interested in.
- complete a criminal and sexual offender background
check form. (All staff and volunteers are subject
to a criminal background check and a sexual offender check.)
- determine the exact start-up
procedure for your placement.
|
Each
placement has a distinct training and start-up procedure.
Some placements require that you attend another orientation
in the department you will be volunteering in before your
training.
Other placements require that you "shadow"
a seasoned volunteer in the placement that you are entering
to learn the skills that are needed to perform the job.
