Keeping Track of your time
Keeping track of your volunteer time
is easy and convenient. Signing in or submitting a timesheet to
the Volunteer Department allows us to keep track of your time which
helps us report our progress to the MGH community.
For volunteers in hospital
assignments:
If you volunteer any day Monday through
Friday between the hours of 8:30 AM and 7:00 PM, please sign in using the touchscreen computer
system in the Volunteer Department office.
If you volunteer at times other than
those mentioned above, you should sign in at the main information
desk in the lobby of the White Building.
For volunteers in
research assignments:
If you volunteer in a research placement
at MGH, you should submit your time weekly to the
Volunteer Department using the Volunteer Timesheet .

Absences
Absences are an inevitable
part of volunteering. There will be times that it will be difficult
for you to make your scheduled time at MGH.
We ask that you do not email
but instead call the Volunteer Department at 617-726-8540 as soon
as you know that you will not be able to come in on a particular
day. If you can't volunteer on your
scheduled day, but can on another day of the week, we are happy
to review the schedule and find another shift that will work for
you.
If you can't volunteer at all during your scheduled shift or any
of the available shifts for that week, we will assist you with passing
along that information to those individuals who need to know.
If you call and get our voicemail, please leave us a message telling
us:
- Who you are.
- When and where you volunteer.
- A telephone number where you can
be reached.

Dress
Code
Volunteers who are in hospital
assignments are required to wear a volunteer jacket or polo shirt. The jacket
is secured with a refundable $15 deposit. The polo shirt is purchased for $15. Each volunteer is responsible
for keeping his or her own jacket or shirt clean and bringing it to volunteer
each week.
Once you have left your position as a volunteer, you have 90 days
to return your jacket and receive your original $15 deposit. If
the jacket is clean, you will receive a full refund of $15. If the
jacket is soiled, the deposit will be reduced to $10 to cover the
cost of cleaning the jacket. If you return the jacket beyond 90
days, we will be unable to refund the deposit but are happy to
accept the jacket back for use in the program. We are unable to
refund any money for the polo shirts.
Dress code prohibits the wearing of blue jeans,
sweatpants, exercise pants, shorts, hats, sunglasses, T-shirts
and
open-toed shoes. |

Lockers and Locks
Lockers are available to all
volunteers to store valuables during their shift. However, lockers
are limited and must remain available for all volunteers. You are
asked to use the locker only during your shift.
Volunteers are asked to bring their own lock for use in the
locker room. Locks are available through the Volunteer Department
for those individuals who forget to bring a lock. You are asked
to return the lock and the key at the end of your shift. There is
a $5 charge for any lost locks or keys. The $5 is applied to the
purchase of a replacement lock.

Parking Validation
All MGH Volunteers are eligible for free parking for the time that
they volunteer. Parking is available at the PET Scan lot, located
on Fruit Street across from the main entrance to Mass Eye and Ear,
at the two MGH garages on Fruit Street and Parkman Street and in the Charlestown
Navy Yard garage located at Building 149.
For volunteers in hospital placements:
Please park at the MGH main Campus
according to this schedule:
Monday through Friday,
7:00 AM - 1:00 PM, utilize the PET scan lot on Fruit Street.
Monday through Friday,
after 1:00 PM and all day on Saturdays and Sundays, use the Fruit
Street and Parkman Street Garages.
How to get your parking ticket validated:
- Monday through Friday between 8:30 AM
and 7:00 PM, bring the parking stub from the PET scan lot or the Fruit
or Parkman Street garages (depending on the time of the day) to the
Volunteer Department office in Clinics # 143.
- Monday through Friday after 7 PM and all day
on Saturday and Sunday, go directly to the Central Pay Cashier in the
garage in which you parked at the end of your shift.
Inform the cashier that you are a volunteer, and show the cashier
your volunteer badge. The cashier will validate your parking,
and give your parking ticket back to you.
For volunteers in research placements:
If you volunteer in a research placement, you are entitled
to validation stickers through the Volunteer Department for use in the parking
garage located in the Charlestown Navy Yard next to building 149. You are asked
to park in this garage Monday - Friday.
To receive validation stickers for use in the Navy Yard, please come to the Volunteer
Department office located on the Main Campus of MGH in Clinics # 143. Volunteers are asked to
ride the Partners shuttle over from the Navy Yard to get to the Main Campus, as the Volunteer Department can validate parking
at only one location for each volunteer.
If you volunteer at the Main Campus on either Saturday or Sunday, you may park in either the Fruit Street or Parkman
Street garage and follow the directions listed above for parking ticket validation.

Cell Phones / Beeper / Pager Usage
Under no circumstances should
a volunteer be receiving or making cellular phone calls while on
duty. Cellular phones interfere with some patient care equipment.
In addition to cell phones, beepers and pagers are restricted to
off-duty time. It is recommended that all cell phones, beepers and
pages be secured in the lockers provided to you by the Volunteer
Department.
